Every adviser the SEC oversees
Every firm that manages money for others in the United States files a Form ADV with the Securities and Exchange Commission, either to register or, for venture capital and private fund advisers, to report as an exempt reporting adviser. The search covers the SEC's whole roster, about 24,000 firms: the legal and business names, the CRD and SEC file numbers, the principal and mailing offices, phone and websites, the organization form and where it is organized, the fiscal year end, the number of employees, regulatory assets under management with discretionary and non-discretionary accounts, whether the firm manages private funds, the states where it has a notice filing, and whether it or its affiliates report a disciplinary event. Filter to exempt reporting advisers with private funds to list venture and private equity managers, or to registered advisers over a size to list the large asset managers. Brought up to date every day from the SEC's roster.

Common questions
- Where does this information come from?
- From Form ADV, the form every investment adviser files with the Securities and Exchange Commission to register or, for venture capital and private fund advisers, to report as an exempt reporting adviser. Croma keeps an organized copy of the SEC's adviser roster, brought up to date every day, and of every private fund reported since 2011, brought up to date every month, and returns them structured, free and with no account. There is only a cap on searches per hour from the same connection.
- What is an exempt reporting adviser?
- An adviser that manages only venture capital funds, or only private funds under $150 million, does not have to register with the SEC but still files Form ADV to report. Most venture capital firms fall here, alongside many smaller private equity and real estate managers, which is why the roster carries both kinds.
- Why is assets under management empty for some firms?
- Exempt reporting advisers do not answer the part of the form that asks for assets under management, so the field is empty for them. Their size shows in the other direction: look the firm up by CRD to see every private fund it reports with its gross asset value.
- How do I see a firm's funds?
- Open the adviser by its CRD number, which every result carries. The lookup returns the funds the firm currently reports, largest first, with a total and a breakdown by fund type. The private fund search covers the same funds across every adviser.
