The lookup returns everything the adviser reports about one private fund on Schedule D of its Form ADV, as of the latest filing that lists it: the adviser and its type, the fund's type and the adviser's own words for it, the state and country it is organized in, gross asset value, minimum investment, approximate number of beneficial owners, the share owned by the adviser and its related persons, by funds of funds and by non-US persons, master and feeder links, the exclusion it relies on, whether other advisers also advise it, whether it is audited, by whom and with what opinion, whether it uses a prime broker, custodian or administrator, its general partners, the file numbers of its Form D notices, and the filing that reported all of it, with whether the adviser still reports the fund. - Where does this information come from?
- From Form ADV, the form every investment adviser files with the Securities and Exchange Commission to register or, for venture capital and private fund advisers, to report as an exempt reporting adviser. - What is a fund id?
- The number Form ADV assigns to each private fund the first time an adviser reports it: 805- followed by ten digits, as in 805-8573539182. It stays with the fund across filings and even when another adviser takes it over, which is why it is the key here.
- The id shows no result. Why?
- Because no Form ADV filing since 2011 reports a fund under it. Ids exist only for private funds reported on Schedule D; a mutual fund, an ETF or a fund managed by an adviser that registers only with a state has none. A fund reported for the first time last month arrives with the next monthly update.
- How does this relate to Form D?
- A Form D is the notice a fund files when it raises money; Form ADV is what its adviser reports about it every year. The fund record carries the file numbers of its Form D notices, so the two can be read together: the raise on one side, the size and structure on the other.
