One adviser and its funds
The lookup returns the SEC's record of one adviser by its CRD number, the identifier the SEC and FINRA share for every firm: names, SEC file number, status and when it took effect, the date of the latest filing, principal and mailing offices, phone and websites, organization form, fiscal year end, employees, regulatory assets under management with account counts, notice-filed states, and the private fund and disclosure flags. Below it, the private funds the firm reports on its latest Form ADV, largest first, with the gross asset value added up and broken down by fund type: venture capital, private equity, hedge, real estate and the rest. - Where does this information come from?
- From Form ADV, the form every investment adviser files with the Securities and Exchange Commission to register or, for venture capital and private fund advisers, to report as an exempt reporting adviser. There is only a cap on searches per hour from the same connection.
- What is a CRD number?
- The number the Central Registration Depository assigns to every firm and person in the securities industry, shared by the SEC and FINRA. a16z's, for instance, is 160489. It never changes, which is why it is the key here; the adviser search returns it for every firm.
- The number shows no result. Why?
- Because the SEC's roster has no adviser under it today. The roster lists firms registered with the SEC or reporting to it as exempt reporting advisers; a firm registered only with a state, a broker-dealer without an advisory registration, or a firm that withdrew is not on it. Individuals have CRD numbers too and are not covered.
- Are the fund sizes current?
- They are what the firm reported on its latest Form ADV, which every adviser must update within 90 days of its fiscal year end and whenever something material changes. Most firms file in March. Each fund shows the date of the filing that reported it.
