Every private fund reported to the SEC

Every adviser that reports to the SEC lists each private fund it manages on Schedule D of its Form ADV: the fund's name and id, the type it classifies it as (venture capital, private equity, hedge, real estate, securitized asset, liquidity or other), the state and country it is organized in, its gross asset value, the minimum investment, the approximate number of beneficial owners, how much of it the adviser and its related persons, funds of funds and non-US persons own, whether it is a master or a feeder, the exclusion it relies on, whether it is audited and by whom, whether it uses a prime broker, custodian or administrator, its general partners, and the file numbers of its Form D notices. The search covers every fund reported since 2011, as of the latest filing that lists it, and marks the ones an adviser's newer filing no longer reports. Brought up to date every month as the SEC publishes each month's filings.

Common questions

Where does this information come from?
From Form ADV, the form every investment adviser files with the Securities and Exchange Commission to register or, for venture capital and private fund advisers, to report as an exempt reporting adviser. Croma keeps an organized copy of the SEC's adviser roster, brought up to date every day, and of every private fund reported since 2011, brought up to date every month, and returns them structured, free and with no account. There is only a cap on searches per hour from the same connection.
What counts as a private fund here?
Any pooled investment vehicle that would be an investment company but for the exclusions in sections 3(c)(1) and 3(c)(7) of the Investment Company Act: venture capital, private equity, hedge, real estate, securitized asset and liquidity funds, and the vehicles advisers describe in their own words as other. Registered mutual funds and ETFs are not on Form ADV's Schedule D.
What does currently reported mean?
Every Form ADV restates the adviser's whole fund list, so a fund is current while the adviser's latest filing still lists it. Once a newer filing omits it, because it was liquidated, merged or handed to another adviser, it is marked as no longer reported with the date of that filing. The search shows current funds unless you include former ones.
Is gross asset value the same as fund size?
Close, but gross. It is the value of the fund's assets before subtracting borrowings, as of the adviser's latest filing, not the committed capital of the fund or its net asset value. A venture fund early in its life shows what it has drawn and invested so far, not what it raised.
Why does a fund appear under one adviser when several manage it?
A fund advised by several firms is reported by each of them, and the record keeps the adviser whose filing reported it most recently. The other advisers are noted in the record, and the Form D file numbers tie the fund to its own fundraise notices.
