The whole criterion behind the registro digital
Given the registro digital you get the tesis exactly as published: rubro and subtitle, whether it is jurisprudencia or a tesis aislada, the control key, the época, the instance, the circuit and the chamber or court that issued it, the subjects (materias) and its position in the Semanario Judicial de la Federación (book, volume, page, month and year). You also get the full text with its hechos, criterio jurídico and justificación sections, the publication notes, the precedents it grew out of, how the criterion was formed (a contradicción de criterios, for instance), the date it appeared in the Semanario, the date from which it became binding, and the registros digitales of the linked rulings and votes. That is what you need to cite a criterion in full, with its exact reference, in an amparo, a pleading or an opinion.

- Where do I find the registro digital?
- In the case law search tool: enter the topic, for example interés usurario, and copy the registro digital of the criterion you need. It is also cited in rulings and in the precedent notes of other tesis, as número de registro digital.
- From when is a tesis binding?
- The result carries the date it appeared in the Semanario and the date from which the criterion became binding, usually the next business day. Tesis predating the Gaceta have neither date and those fields come back empty.
- Is it free? Are there any limits?
- Yes, it is free and needs no account. There is only a cap on lookups per hour from the same connection to prevent abuse, and one tesis per lookup. For volume, use the Croma API.
- Why does the lookup come back empty?
- Because no criterion matches that number. A registro digital is 4 to 10 digits, with no dots or spaces; if you copied it from a ruling, check that a hyphen or the year did not slip in. To find it by topic, use the case law search.
