Every match comes back with the rubro (the heading that states the criterion), the registro digital, whether it is jurisprudencia (binding) or a tesis aislada (persuasive only), the control key such as 1a./J. 2/2023 (11a.), the época, the instance and the court that issued it, the subjects (materias), the year and its location in the Semanario: book, volume and page. The result also carries facets, the valid values of each filter with their hit counts, so before narrowing you already know how many civil-law or Eleventh Época criteria answer your topic. 01What is the difference between jurisprudencia and a tesis aislada?
Jurisprudencia is binding on the courts the law designates; a tesis aislada states a criterion that persuades but does not bind. The tesis type filter lets you keep only one of the two, or see both.
02Where do these tesis come from?
From Mexico's Supreme Court (SCJN), as published in the Semanario Judicial de la Federación y su Gaceta. Croma queries that source and returns each criterion as separate fields, ready to cite.
03Is it free? Are there any limits?
Yes, it is free and needs no account. There is only a cap on lookups per hour from the same connection to prevent abuse, and each page returns up to 50 criteria. For volume, use the Croma API.
04Why does my search return nothing?
Usually because the filters are too tight. Drop the época, the subject or the year and use fewer words: the search runs over the rubro and the text of the tesis, not over synonyms. Check the facets in the result too, since they show which values actually have matches.
