The CRF and who blocks it when it is missing

The Fundo de Garantia do Tempo de Serviço (FGTS) is the fund every employer in Brazil must deposit into each month on behalf of its workers, and Caixa Econômica Federal, which administers it, issues the Certificado de Regularidade do FGTS (CRF) to employers that are current. This lookup verifies a CNPJ with Caixa at the time of the request and returns regular with the valid certificate (number, start and end of validity and establishment address) or irregular with the impediments reported by the PGFN or by Caixa itself. Optionally it adds the certificates issued in the last 24 months, and it answers found: false when the CNPJ is not registered as an employer. The CRF is a requirement to contract with the State, receive public funds and close many deals with Brazilian employers.

Common questions

From Caixa Econômica Federal, the public bank that administers the FGTS and issues the Certificado de Regularidade do FGTS. Croma queries the official source at the time of the request and returns the status organized. It is an informational lookup: to present to third parties, the certificate Caixa issues is still the one that counts.

Yes, it is free and needs no account. There is only a cap on lookups per hour from the same connection to prevent abuse, and one CNPJ per lookup. For volume, use the Croma API.

That Caixa does not have that CNPJ registered as an employer, so there is no certificate or impediment to report. It is a definitive answer, not an error. Enter the CNPJ as 14 digits with no dots, slashes or dashes.

Irregular means Caixa is not issuing the CRF for that CNPJ at this time. The response lists each impediment with the body that reports it, PGFN or Caixa, and its message, so you know with whom the employer needs to regularize. The status can change from one day to the next, so check the lookup date.
