What the cédula validity lookup is
The Registraduría Nacional del Estado Civil is the authority that keeps the civil registry of Colombians, from birth to death, and issues the cédula de ciudadanía, the national ID. Its validity lookup reports the document's status: valid (vigente), or cancelled, mainly due to the holder's death, an update that comes from the civil death record.
Croma queries the cédula's validity by document number and returns the status exactly as the Registraduría publishes it: the most direct signal to confirm survival across a credit portfolio, verify identity and support due diligence.
How fresh the data is
Croma queries the Registraduría live at the moment of your search. The status reflects the updates the authority has processed: a cancellation due to death appears after the death is recorded in the civil registry and the Registraduría processes the update.
Coverage and limits
- Covers cédulas de ciudadanía issued by the Registraduría; it does not apply to minors' identity cards or foreigner ID documents.
- The lookup reports the document's validity status; it does not publish additional biographical data or the holder's contact information.
- There can be a lag between a death and its reflection in the lookup while the record is registered and processed.

Frequently asked questions
- 01What does it mean that a cédula is cancelled due to death?
- That the Registraduría cancelled the document after the holder's death was recorded in the civil registry, through the corresponding resolution.
- 02Does a valid cédula guarantee the person is alive?
- It indicates the Registraduría has not registered a death record. If the death has not yet been recorded or the update is still being processed, the document can appear valid for a while.
- 03Does the lookup work as an official validity certificate?
- No. For formal filings you need the certificate issued by the Registraduría; the public lookup is informational.
